(Silver Spring, Md.) — To celebrate 25 years of the pop culture phenomenon SHARK WEEK, Discovery Channel is putting viewers in control with YouTube Celebrity Philip DeFranco at the helm. For the first time ever, fans on social media will determine what appears on Discovery Channel in “Shark Week Chompdown.” Beginning Sunday, August 12th at 9PM – the kickoff of the 25th anniversary of SHARK WEEK – fans can take to Twitter and SHARK WEEK’S Facebook page to vote on which item a massive mechanical megalodon shark – featured in the show “Sharkzilla” – will crush with its huge hydraulic jaws.

Philip DeFranco, of The Philip DeFranco Show on Revision3 will host the nightly event, asking people to Tweet their votes using hashtags that will appear on the screen and to vote through a live poll on Facebook. The results will be tabulated and the item garnering the most votes that night will fall victim to the shark’s 6” long razor-sharp teeth and crushed to bits for all the country to see.

DeFranco will also host “Shark Week’s 25 Best Bites” on Thursday, August 16th at 10PM E/P. The one-hour program is a jaw-dropping look back at the greatest breaches, bites, and brushes with the ocean’s apex predator. DeFranco takes viewers on a fast-paced ride “Into the Shark Bite,” with “Sharks After Dark,” living through a “Sharkbite Summer” and how to protect oneself from a “Great White Appetite.” From shark attacks to never-before-seen camera angles, and featuring insights from some of the veteran wildlife filmmakers behind the shots, the countdown culminates with the greatest shot in SHARK WEEK history.

Tune in to the Discovery Channel on Sunday, August 12th to celebrate 25 years of the ocean’s apex predator taking over the network – and don’t say we didn’t warn you!

David Prager to Leave Revision3

June 21st, 2012 at 10:18 by David Prager in Announcements

After 7 years, I’ve decided that it’s time for a change. There are always times of change and shift in our lives at different rates of frequency, be they personal or professional. For me, the decision to leave Revision3 is both, as the experience has encompassed and consumed my life to a large extent on both levels. Because of that personal connection and my love of the work that I’ve been so privileged to do for so long, I will still continue to do work for Revision3, just not on a full time basis.

The promise and draw of new opportunities and challenges is extremely compelling and with Revision3′s positive and successful sale to Discovery Communications, the time is ripe for a change.

I very much look forward to staying in touch with all of the friends, fans, colleagues, and competitors that have led me to where I am proud to be today. Pasted below is the email I sent yesterday to the staff of Revision3.

David Prager

#######

Moving On, Sort of…

I’ve spent the past 7 years doing the most fulfilling work of my life. I loved building a culture and passion around an idea and bringing on people smarter than I am that can do their jobs better than I could. I loved seeing their thoughts develop ideas to places I never thought of. When I helped found Revision3, I admit I didn’t realize just how impactful and how notable a role we would play in the still rapidly evolving world of digital entertainment, television, distribution, and its business models.

It is because of all of you that the vision gained strength. It is because of all of you that we were able to trail-blaze, pioneer, and turn what was a volatile and unknown marketplace into a profitable business. It is because of all of you that we caught the eyes of some of the biggest media companies on the planet. Together, we shook traditional media giants to the the core so much that perhaps the smartest and most respectable one of them all, Discovery, realized that the combined power of our collective knowledge and ability could be the perfect media (new media) company for the coming generations.

And so with that milestone and with a heavy heart, I have decided to wrap up my tenure as a full time employee of Revision3. I’m excited about starting the next chapter of my career and will be sharing a couple of the projects I will be working on with you all soon in the weeks ahead. My decision to leave Revision3 is wholly my own, but one that I couldn’t make cleanly. Although I won’t be here day-to-day, I will continue to serve Revision3 as an advisor and will continue to work on a couple of different productions – one a revival of a modified version of Toasted Donut with Glenn McElhose and one a yet to be launched show whose pilot involved a small (errr… rather large) scorpion.

Finally, I want to reiterate just how proud I am about how hard the Revision3 team has worked to take us to where we are today. There are lots of exciting things going on with Revision3 post acquisition and I’m thrilled for the promise and opportunity for the company, the industry, and everyone involved. I have an incredible amount of confidence in our team as well as the synergy between Revision3 and Discovery to lead to un-paralleled success.

All my respect and appreciation,
David

DISCOVERY COMMUNICATIONS TO ACQUIRE TOP DIGITAL VIDEO PROVIDER REVISION3

Purchase Will Bolster Discovery’s Leadership in Creating & Delivering Content Across All Screens

(Silver Spring, Md.) – Discovery Communications announced today that it has entered into an agreement to acquire San Francisco-based digital video provider Revision3. Leveraging Revision3’s vast experience in creating engaging online video content in a cost-effective manner, the transaction helps fuel Discovery’s strategy of being the number one nonfiction media company on all screens.

“Discovery’s mission to ignite viewers’ curiosity and its history of pioneering new platforms – from cable to HD to 3D – make it the logical leader in this explosive new wave of digital video growth,” said JB Perrette, Chief Digital Officer, Discovery Communications, who made today’s announcement. “With Revision3’s industry-leading management team and roster of great talent, we look forward to cultivating more original content and fresh personalities that resonate with passionate communities online and across all platforms, while enhancing our innovative marketing solutions for advertising partners.”

The leading independent Internet digital video production company, with more than 23 million monthly unique viewers across 27 digital channels, Revision3 has created a technology and distribution platform that powers the scalable production, monetization and distribution of video content for passionate online communities. With programs hosted by authentic online celebrities, including top bloggers, Twitter stars and YouTube sensations, the company’s content aligns with many of Discovery’s top linear program genres, such as tech, cooking and popular science. Revision3 boasts one of the 10 largest networks on YouTube and distribution with more than 40 other partners including iTunes, Google, AOL, Yahoo!, TiVo, Roku, Boxee, CNET and Zune.

“Revision3 has always focused on creating compelling programs featuring authentic hosts that sit at the center of engaged and targeted communities,” said Jim Louderback, CEO of Revision3. “We’re huge fans of Discovery’s networks, and couldn’t imagine a more appropriate company to team up with to develop the future of original web-based video.”

Revision3 was founded in 2005 by Kevin Rose (Digg, TechTV), Jay Adelson (Digg, Equinix) and David Prager (TechTV). Louderback, former editor-in-chief of PC Magazine and a veteran of TechTV, joined Revision3 as CEO in 2007. Louderback and team will continue their leadership of Revision3 under the new ownership structure.

For this transaction, Discovery Communications was advised by Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP, and Revison3 was advised by RBC Capital Markets and Gunderson Dettmer Stough Villeneuve Franklin & Hachigian, LLP.

The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, and the parties expect the closing to occur on or before June 1.

Triune Films and Revision3 Launch New Comic Book Show: Variant

May 2nd, 2012 at 12:22 by Rob Saurini in Announcements, Press Releases, Shows

It’s my pleasure to announce the launch of Variant on Revision3. This show is the latest series from Triune Films, the team behind Film Riot and Film State. We’ve been working with Ryan Connolly (head of Triune) for almost three years now and by now you all know what I saw way back then: this guy produces great stuff. Variant is no exception.

Variant is a weekly news show about everything comic book related, including graphic novels, TV Shows, film, cons, and games. We’ll join host Arris Quinones as he explores new releases, adaptations of comics into other mediums, indie comics, artists, writers, and conferences. Special segments and projects will include animation of real world superheroes, fan created artwork and comics, and interviews and advice from experts.

All you have to do is watch any episode of Film Riot or Film State and you know that this show is going to have the same sense of humor and great production values that Ryan brings to any of his projects. There’s a definite need for a high quality show that is a resource for all you need to know about the comic world from week to week. Variant is going to fill that need!

Please go check out episode #1 here and subscribe for future episodes!

Revision3 Launches New Show with io9: We Come From The Future

April 13th, 2012 at 10:03 by Rob Saurini in Announcements, Press Releases, Shows

It’s my pleasure to announce the launch of the latest Revision3 show: io9: We Come From The Future! This show is a collaboration between Revision3 and io9. We’ve had a blast developing out this show and I think everyone is really going to like it.

As many of you know, io9 is the wildly popular science/sci-fi website. As they put it: “io9 is entertainment, science, and futuristic culture for people who want to escape the everyday.” Our show is based on the editorial of the site and is hosted by the actual editor-in-chief of io9, Annalee Newitz and io9 writer Esther Inglis-Arkell. This show is all about staying true to the voice and vision of the site while bringing a new dimension to the content. For one thing, we’re bringing it off the page and into video! You’ll be able to watch the show on their site as well as right here on Revision3.com.

The show will bring you news, stories and experiments from a tomorrow that you wish you lived today. The inaugural episode includes a review of Joss Whedon’s The Cabin in the Woods, an experiment that turns a pickle into a lightbulb and speculation on how dark matter effects our bodies.

We’ve really enjoyed collaborating with Annalee and Esther as we’ve developed out this show format and production. Tekzilla producer Roger Chang has been instrumental in getting this show going for you, as has Matt Labate, our head of development. I’d like to thank those guys for their hard work along with Annalee and Esther and am excited for all of us viewers to be able to enjoy the fruits of that labor.

io9, We Come From The Future has a big future in front of it and we’re excited to be a part of it.

Catherine Reitman Does Movie Reviews Right in Breakin' It Down on Revision3

March 23rd, 2012 at 08:30 by Rob Saurini in Announcements, Press Releases, Shows

If you love movies, today is a great day on Revision3! We are proud to announce that Catherine Reitman is joining the Revision3 family. She is launching Breakin’ it Down on the Rev3 network, growing it out platform wide from its current Youtube channel home. I’ve been a fan of Breakin’ It Down pretty much since episode #1. I followed a link from Twitter and found one of the few YouTube shows that made me laugh out loud right from the start. I’m so excited to be working with Catherine and her team at CandorTV to bring this show to many more fans across the Revision3 network.

Every week Catherine Reitman sees new movies and tells you which ones are worth your money and which ones should be dragged out into the street and beaten with sticks. We love her “no-holds-barred” voice and personality and combined with the fact that she kicks Harry’s hapless sound guy ass all the time, she’s a perfect fit for our audience and programming.

Before Catherine Reitman started making her own name in Hollywood, she spent years studying and perfecting her craft in some of the most prominent theater programs in the nation. She attended Ithaca College’s prestigious BFA program. She also received a minor in film from the University of Southern California. Her studies continued in London as well as at the Groundlings School, where she performed in their Sunday Improv Company. Incidentally, she’s from a very talented Hollywood family with both her dad Ivan and brother Jason recognized amongst the industry’s top directors.

Catherine is most known for playing Maureen Ponderosa, the dead toothed wife of Dennis Reynolds, on FX’s cult hit “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” where she will be returning next season. She also has a long list of film credits, including “Friends with Benefits”, “I Love You Man”, “Knocked Up”, “Post Grad”, “My Super Ex-Girlfriend” as well as several embarrassing cameos in her father’s films when she was a wee girl.

Please join me in welcoming Catherine and Breaking It Down to the Revision3 family. Check out the show, I’m pretty sure you’ll find it as funny as I do!

REVISION3 LAUNCHES VERTICAL CHANNELS

Rev3Games and Rev3Tech to Offer One-Stop Shop for Tech and Gaming Content

Tuesday, March 13th, 20012 – Revision3 has announced the launch of two vertical destinations today – Rev3Games and Rev3Tech. These two new portals represent the first of several verticals the company plans to launch this year. Both verticals can be found on Revision3 as well as on YouTube, and across the entire Revision3 distribution network.

Rev3Games and Rev3Tech feature game and tech programming delivered in an easily digestible format – quick clips, reviews, tips and tricks – and in a distinctive voice by the trusted personalities of Revision3’s show hosts, coordinated from a central editorial base. Cross promotion and strategic collaboration across shows are planned, as well as launching new series based on the interest and feedback from viewers.

Revision3 has been delivering great gaming and tech content since its founding and now fans can tune it to Rev3Games and Rev3Tech to find it categorically in one place. Rev3Games will feature content from popular Revision3 shows including Destructoid, New Challenger and The Totally Rad Show, as well as newly created segments “Good Jobs” and “Casual Fridays”. Rev3Tech will include content from Tekzilla, AppJudgment, TechnoBuffalo, Soldier Knows Best, GeekBeat.TV, Ty’s iHelp and WilsonTech1 Daily, as well as special segments coinciding with product announcements and industry events.

“We are now firmly into the third wave of video,” said Revision3 CEO Jim Louderback, “where targeted channels focused on audiences and topics are delivering audiences as big as – or bigger – than some cable channels. Revision3 has been leading the way here for the last 7 years, and now we’re taking the next step with these two channels that curate our industry leading shows, and provide a place for us to launch a wide range of new shows.”

Features of Rev3Games and Rev3Tech include:

• Main landing page with latest content with sub show pages below
• Aggregated coverage from Industry Trade shows such as E3, PAX, CES
